Every season, we hold auditions for our Furlan Auditorium and After Sunset productions and EVERYONE is welcome to try out for our shows!

  • All people auditioning will be asked to fill out an audition information sheet for the auditions. We prefer you print the form out in advance, complete it, and bring it with you to the auditionthis will make you check in process go much faster.   • If cast in A CHORUS LINE you will need to provide: girls – 1 pair tan T-strap character shoes   Guys – 1 pair of tan jazz shoes.

Synopsis

A Chorus Line is a stunning musical capturing the spirit and tension of a Broadway chorus audition. Exploring the inner lives and bittersweet ambitions of professional Broadway performers, the show features one powerhouse number after another. Memorable musical numbers include “What I Did for Love,” “One,” “I Can Do That,” “At the Ballet,” and “I Hope I Get It.”

Cast – We are looking for a diverse group of performers!  

Age ranges below are flexible as long as you are at least 18 by July 11, 2024.

ZACH: (25-30s) The director and choreographer of the show. Does not sing except for the final production number, “One.”

LARRY: (20s-30s) Zach’s assistant. 

ALAN DELUCA: (20s) Baritone. From the Bronx. Very street tough, macho, newly married to Kristine.

BOBBY MILLS: (20s-30s) Baritone. Flamboyant, funny, and witty. Very sharp tongued. Covers everything over with a joke, had a very hard childhood. From upstate New York.

DON KERR: (20s-30s) Baritone. Ladies’ man, married, into cars, money, and women. Very sure of himself, cocky, worked with Zach before. From Kansas City.

GREGORY GARDENER: (20s-30s) Baritone. Over sexed, over drugged, done it all before. Very conscious of how he looks and appears to others. Quite a smart-alec and has worked with Zach before. Very East Side New York.

MARK ANTHONY: (18-25) Tenor. Optimistic, first timer, naïve but charming. Great dancer and All American kid. Hopeful and fresh. Very young from Arizona.

MIKE COSTA: (20s-30s) Tenor. Quite aggressive, determined, cocky, sure of himself but likeable. Tap dancer who worked with Zach before. Experienced and flirts with the girls. From New Jersey.

PAUL SAN MARCO:  (20s-30s) Baritone. Introverted and slightly insecure but loves performing-is only now starting to feel comfortable about being gay and accepted by his parents. From Spanish Harlem, New York. Friends with Diana.

RICHIE WALTERS: (20s-30s) Tenor. From Missouri. African American, strong dancer, enthusiastic, cool and funny. Very likeable and laid back.

BEBE BENZENHEIMER: (20s-30s) Alto. From Boston. Very insecure about her looks, very funny which is a cover for her insecurities. Feels a little bit excluded but just wants to be liked.

CASSIE FERGUSON:  (25-30s) Soprano. Older Dancer. Returning to the chorus after years of being a featured performer. Very strong dancer. Shy & kind hearted. Previously had a relationship with Zach.

CONNIE WONG:  (20s-30s) Alto. Experienced dancer. Short. Married. A bit of a mother hen with a great sense of humor. Born in Chinatown, Lower East Side, New York.

DIANA MORALES: (20s-30s) Alto. Streetwise, a little bit tough, eternal optimist and starry eyed. A determined athletic dancer from the Bronx.

JUDY TURNER:  (20s-30s) Mezzo. Funny, gawky, nervous, scatterbrain, tall. Warm and hopeful. Very awkward except when dancing.

KRISTINE URICH: (20s) Mezzo. Wide-eyed, naïve. Very nervous when not dancing. Married to Al.

MAGGIE WINSLOW: (20s-30s) Soprano. A sweetheart, little sister type. Dreamer. Fairly experienced dancer from California.

SHEILA BRYANT: (late 20s-30s) Alto. Oldest dancer on the line. Brassy, sexy, sassy and sophisticated. One of the more popular dancers, very funny.

VALERIE CLARK: (20s-30s) Mezzo. Sexy, sassy, funny & foul-mouthed. A brazen, direct, attention seeker from Vermont.

AUDITION DANCERS: 2 males and 3 females (18-30s) will understudy and sing throughout the show

A diverse cast is needed.  Please join us and audition for this rarely-done musical and your summer will be “One Singular Sensation.” 

Sunset Playhouse searching for professional singers and Rising Stars for its Musical MainStage Concert Series. 

Sunset Playhouse will hold auditions for its professional Musical MainStage Concert Series Thursday, May 23, 2024 at the Playhouse, 700 Wall Street in Elm Grove.  

Musical MainStage is a series of six concerts requiring four professional singers and one Rising Star per show. Styles needed for its 2024-25 season include rock, pop, standards, folk, jazz, and country. Rehearsals are minimal and performances take place on Mondays and Tuesdays. Students who will be enrolled in any area high school from September, 2024 – June, 2025 are eligible to be named a Rising Star. All singers should bring 32 bars of sheet music in their key; an accompanist will be provided.

You will provide us with a valid phone number and email (this information will be discarded after auditions and not used for any other purposes.) Candidates should fill out either a RISING STAR Audition Sheet or a PROFESSIONAL Audition Sheet. Arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your scheduled audition time with a copy of your completed audition form and sheet music in your key, plus a resume and head shot if you have one. If you need to cancel, please do so as early as possible on this site.

Q: I’ve auditioned in the past, can I come in again?

A: If you’ve auditioned previously or appeared in a previous Musical MainStage production, we do NOT need to see you again.

Q: Is this paid?

A: Professional performers will receive a stipend.

Q: When will I be notified?

A: All auditioners will be notified via email by June 30th

FAQ for RISING STARS:

Q: I’ve auditioned in the past; can I come in again?

A: It is not necessary if you’ve been seen before but if you would like to try again, you may.

Q: Am I eligible?

A: If you are, or will be, enrolled in any area high school (including home or online) from September, 2023-June, 2024.

Q: Can duets or small groups audition?

A: Yes, but no more than four people; all should be singers.

Q: Will Sunset have music available to those auditioning?

A: No, singers must bring their own sheet music. 32 bars (no more than 2 minutes) in your key and please do NOT read the music off your phone!

Q: If the singer doesn’t have music, can they sing a capella or bring recorded music?
A: A capella is not recommended for professional auditions. No recorded music!

Q: What kind of song should I sing?

A: 32 bars of whatever song best shows off your voice, something you can sing with confidence. We’re looking for all styles—rock, pop, standards, country, folk, and jazz.

Q: Is this an audition for a musical—one of the main stage shows?

A: No, this is for our concert series featuring professional singers and musicians.

Q: How much rehearsing is involved?

A: Rehearsals take place on Monday evenings. Three rehearsals starting a month before the show, plus one tech rehearsal on Sunday. Since there are only four, performers must also work on their own.

Q: Are Rising Stars paid?

A: Not in dollars, but it’s an opportunity to work in a professional environment and gain knowledge, confidence, and exposure. Each Rising Star also receives two comps for opening night, and several have later received college scholarship monies.

Q: When will those chosen be notified?

A: Everyone who auditions, whether selected or not, will receive email notification by June 30th.

Q: What if I’m sick or can’t make it.

SUMMER STARS BROADWAY CABARET, 2024

Students enrolling in 9th – 12th grade for the 2024-2025 academic year AND students who graduated from high school in 2024 can audition for our Summer Stars Broadway Cabaret. JUNE 12, 2024 @ 4:30 – 7:30

AUDITION PREPARATION: Prepare 32 bars of a Broadway Musical song that you would want to perform at the Cabaret. The piece you audition with will most likely be the piece you will perform. Bring a copy of the music for the music director to use at the audition.

ALL STUDENTS interested in being cast in SUMMER STARS TEEN CABARET, 2024 must audition.  Actors must be available for ALL  rehearsals, tech, and 2 performances to be cast.

Announcing our 2024 JR Musical Audition Series – GREASE:  SCHOOL VERSION

Audition Date: June 18, 2024 @ 6:00 –9:00 PM

Actors are asked to stay for the whole audition time.

Auditions are available for students entering grades 7– age 18.

Synopsis:  Drama critic Mortimer Brewster’s engagement announcement is upended when he discovers a corpse in his elderly aunts’ window seat. Mortimer rushes to tell Abby and Martha before they stumble upon the body themselves, only to learn that the two old women aren’t just aware of the dead man in their parlor, they killed him!

Between his aunts’ penchant for poisoning wine, a brother who thinks he’s Teddy Roosevelt, and another brother using plastic surgery to hide from the police—not to mention his own hesitancy about marriage—it’ll be a miracle if Mortimer makes it to his wedding.

A classic comedy about the only think deadlier than poison: family

Abby Brewster: (60s-70s) A darling lady who poisons elderly men. Abby is the sister of Martha and an aunt to Teddy, Jonathan, and Mortimer.

Teddy Brewster: (40s-50s) Nephew of Abby and Martha Brewster, Teddy thinks that he is Theodore Roosevelt.

Martha Brewster:(60s-70s)  A sweet elderly woman with Victorian charm who poisons elderly men, Martha is the sister of Abby and an aunt to Teddy, Jonathan, and Mortimer.

Elaine Harper: (20s) An attractive girl in her twenties and Mortimer’s fiancee, Elaine is the daughter of the Rev. Dr. Harper. She is surprisingly wise in the ways of the world for a minister’s daughter.

Mortimer Brewster:(20s-30s)  Nephew of Abby and Martha, Mortimer is a drama critic who is engaged to Elaine. He is a nice man who cares for his aunts.

Mr. Gibbs : (30s-40s) A man who wishes to rent a room from the Brewster sisters

Jonathan Brewster: (30s-40s) Nephew of Abby and Martha Brewster, Jonathan is a psychopath who has had plastic surgery and now looks like Boris Karloff.

Dr. Einstein:(40s-50s)  A plastic surgeon and an alcoholic, Dr. Einstein has changed Jonathan’s face three times.

Officer O’Hara: (any age) A police officer, O’Hara is a would-be playwright who pesters Mortimer to read his play.

Lieutenant Roony: (30s-50s) A tough and dominating police officer

Mr. Witherspoon:(30s-50s)  The superintendent of Happy Dale Sanitarium

Synopsis:  Pushed to the boiling point, three female coworkers concoct a plan to get even with the sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot they call their boss. In a hilarious turn of events, Violet, Judy, and Doralee live out their wildest fantasy – giving their boss the boot!

While Hart remains “otherwise engaged,” the women give their workplace a dream makeover, taking control of the company that had always kept them down. Hey, a girl can scheme, can’t she?

Set in the late 1970s with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton, this hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era is outrageous, thought-provoking, and even a little romantic.

Three unlikely friends take control of their office and learn there is nothing they can’t do, even in a man’s world.

Franklin Hart (40s-60s) One of the firm’s executives and a notorious chauvinist. He is capable of faking charm but usually shows his true colors as an arrogant, self-absorbed boss.  Vocal range top: Gb4, Vocal range bottom: C3

Roz Keith (35-45) The attentive office gossip queen and snitch. She has an unrequited love for Mr. Hart and will do anything she can to win his approval. Vocal range top: C5, Vocal range bottom: G3

Joe (25-35) A handsome, young office accountant. Genuine and nice, and smitten with Violet. Vocal range top: G4, Vocal range bottom: B2

Dwayne (25-30) Doralee’s attractive husband. He is very supportive of her professional pursuits. Vocal range top: G4, Vocal range bottom: E2

Josh (15-18) Violet’s awkward teenage son. 

Missy (20-35) Franklin Hart’s wife, clueless to her husband’s true nature.

Dick (35-45) Judy’s soon-to-be ex-husband. An average guy, he is sporting a little less hair and a little more paunch than he did ten years ago. 

Kathy (30-40) A secretary in Hart’s office with a tendency to gossip. Vocal range top: D5, Vocal range bottom: G4

Margaret (30-40) A secretary in Hart’s office with a tendency to drink. 

Tinsworthy (40-70) Franklin Hart’s boss and Chairman of the Board. A good man, who may be wiser to Hart’s ways than he lets on.

Synopsis: Felix Unger, a neurotic, neat freak newswriter, and Oscar Madison, a sloppy, easygoing sportswriter, are the best of friends. As Oscar and the guys gather for a card game, Felix arrives late, tense and very depressed. His wife has just thrown him to the curb and Oscar offers him a place to stay. Oscar’s a mess but thoroughly enjoys life. Felix seems incapable of enjoying anything.

From the pen of beloved playwright Neil Simon, this hysterical comedy about mismatched roommates was a Broadway smash, followed by a successful film and television series.

Characters: (ages are flexible)

 Oscar Madison – (30s-50s) A disorderly mess of a man, and a recently divorced sportswriter.

Felix Ungar – (30s-50s) A finicky, fussy hypochondriac with his own marriage struggles who moves in with Oscar.

Speed – (30s-50s) One of Oscar and Felix’s poker buddies; he is crusty and sarcastic.

Murray – (30s-50s) One of the poker buddies; a NYPD policeman.

Roy – (30s-50s) One of the poker buddies; Oscar’s accountant; he has a dry sense of humor.

Vinnie – (30s-50s) One of the poker buddies; he is subdued and picked-on by Speed.

Gwendolyn and Cecily Pigeon – (20s-30s) English sisters who are Oscar’s upstairs neighbors.

Sunset Playhouse bug in a rug Children’s Theater is looking for actors for our 2024-25 season.

Auditions:

Group Audition: everyone arrive ready to start at 6:30 p.m.

Our bug in a rug Children’s Theater series is an interactive experience for the whole audience (performances are targeted for children ages 3-8.) bug in a rug Theater is a casual and fun introduction to the performing arts where laughter and audience participation are strongly encouraged.  Sunset’s bug in a rug Children’s Theater performs locally at schools, libraries, and community centers.  We also host one weekend of public performances at The Playhouse.

Actors must have:

  • Their own transportation
  • A flexible schedule
  • Daytime and weekend availability
  • A passion and love to work with kids
  • A fantastic sense of humor

This is a paid opportunity. A stipend for rehearsal time (approximately 20 hours) and payment for each performance.

Actors please come to the audition with a 30 – 60 second song prepared to sing acappella. Upbeat songs are preferred.  There is no need to prepare a monologue. The audition will be a group audition with open scenes, improvisation, and then song presentation.

    Synopsis: Accusations, mistaken identities, and romances run wild in this traditional, laugh-out-loud farce!

    Two nuns at the Sisters of Perpetual Sewing have been secretly making wine to keep the convent’s doors open but Paul and Sally, reporters and former fiancées, are hot on their trail. They go undercover as a nun and priest but their presence, combined with the addition of a new nun, spurs paranoia throughout the convent that spies have been sent from Rome to shut them down. Wine and secrets are inevitably spilled as everyone tries to preserve the convent and reconnect with lost loves.

    A sinfully-delightful homage to slapstick comedy with plot twists galore!

    Characters:  (ages are flexible)

    Mother Superior (40s-60s) Runs the Convent of The Sisters of Perpetual Sewing. Won’t allow any word pertaining to alcohol to be uttered in the convent. When Rome decrees insignificant convents be closed, she suspects one of the new arrivals is a spy sent to report back to Rome.

    Sister Augusta (20s-50s) Both Sister Augusta & Sister Philomena have worked together making & selling “grape” juice for years, Sister Augusta has her work cut out for her keeping the secret from Mother Superior, especially when two new nuns arrive and one of them looks to be a spy from Rome.

    Sister Philomena (20s-50s) The convent is the only life she has ever known. Willing to save the convent at any cost she conspires with Sister Augusta to keep the doors open. Her only problem is she can’t lie.

    Sister Mary Catherine (18-30)  An orphan raised by the church, now sent to the convent by Cardinal Redding to finish up her training, Sister Mary Catherine pretends to be a Nun when she really is a Novice. Knowing she will be sent back if they find out, she is wracked with guilt but determined to make The Sisters of Perpetual Sewing her life.

    Father Chenille (40s-50s)  Priest at the local Parish, an amateur magician. Terrified Rome have sent “Father Paul” to take over his parish.

     George (18-30)  Sweet & gentle young man, the groundskeeper for the convent, ready to do anything to help Mother Superior and Father Chenille and the sisters.

     Paul (18-30) Raised in a Catholic Orphanage Paul is a bit scared of Nuns, Working with his ex-fiancé & reporter Sally, (who he still loves) they sneak into the convent to find out who is making the town’s Award Winning Wine. Now he’s been roped into impersonating a Father, spying for the Mother Superior and surprises everyone by turning up as the Cardinal Redding.

    Sally (18-30)  Reporting is her life; Sally is out to get the front-page story of her career. Nothing will get in her way of a good story – not even her wedding day! Previously leaving Paul standing at the altar to chase a lead on a story, Sally and he have been teamed up to find out who has been making the award-winning wine

Synopsis: It is 1928. The world is between wars, the stock market is booming, Berlin is the center of high life and optimism rules the day. However, underneath it all, much is happening with the Grand Hotel’s illustrious clients. Inspired by Vicki Baum’s period novel, issues of life and death, financial ruin, love, and murder converge as people and come and go through the lobby of the Grand Hotel.

Grand Hotel richly contrasts comedy, tragedy, glitz and realism and will captivate the audience from start to finish.

Suggested for mature audiences only due to strong language, simulated drug use, and mature themes.

The Doctor (50s-70s) Grievously wounded by gas and shrapnel in WW1; a cynical, ruined man.

Erik (25-35) The assistant concierge who is deeply in love with his wife. Eager to start a family. Intelligent, ambitious, devoted. Vocal range top: F5, Vocal range bottom: C4

Zinnowitz  (35-50) An attorney in Berlin. The secretary for the company under Preysing’s direction. Encourages Preysing to lie. Ambitious, greedy, and willing to do whatever it takes. Vocal range top: E5, Vocal range bottom: D4

Hermann Preysing (40-60) General Director of a large textile mill. A solid burgher blinded by riches and terrified of losing his lifestyle. He uses lies and money to get what he wants. Vocal range top: G5, Vocal range bottom: B3

Flaemmchen (18-25) A pretty girl who has theatrical ambitions, she wants to go to America and appear in movies. Constantly conflicted between her ambition and her morals. Strong dancer and belter. Vocal range top: E5, Vocal range bottom: E2

Otto Kringelein (35-60) A mortally ill bookkeeper from the small town life looking for new excitement. He is a smart man wanting to live life to the fullest while he can. Humble, joyous, and grateful. Vocal range top: A5, Vocal range bottom: C4

Baron Felix Von Gaigern (30s-40s) Athletic, charming, and optimistic but broke. Wishes to be immoral. A good guy who loves life in the fast lane and falls in love with Grushinskaya. Vocal range top: A5, Vocal range bottom: B3

Raffaela (35-50) Confidante, secretary, and Elizaveta’s dresser. Secretly loves Grushinskaya and always wants to protect her. Hardworking, dependable, and smart. Vocal range top: B4, Vocal range bottom: F3

Elizaveta Grushinskaya (40s-60s) The still-beautiful, world-famous Prima Ballerina on the verge of retirement. Finds herself feeling old until she is revived by the young Baron’s love. The Countess & The Gigolo (20s-40s) Ballroom dancers who dance throughout the show.

Synopsis: When an anonymous note sends a newlywed wife looking for help, Miss Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Dorothy Watson work together to uncover the secrets surrounding a corrupt police inspector whose wives have a habit of turning up dead.

Miss Holmes possesses one of the greatest deductive minds of her generation. Dr. Watson struggles to make a difference at the only hospital in London that will hire female doctors.

This clever reimagining of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic characters pits its heroes not only against cunning criminal masterminds, but also against the rigid and restrictive rules of Victorian society.

Throughout the journey, audiences are treated to a visual spectacle, with stunning costumes, dynamic choreography, and a stage adorned in a brilliant array of colors. The story transcends time, blending ancient tales with a contemporary flair that resonates with audiences of all ages.

Characters: (ages are flexible)

JOSEPH: (18-20s) High Tenor, Vocal Range Low A to High G. Eleventh son of Jacob and Jacob’s favorite. Looking for a strong actor with a confident but charming personality. Must move and sing very well. 

NARRATOR: (20s-30s) Soprano with extended mix/belt range, Low F# to High G. The Narrator is our host, and through word and song guides the audience through the story of Joseph and his brothers. 

PHARAOH: (20s-30s) Baritone, Low B to High G#. Pharaoh is the most powerful man in Egypt, and considered a god on earth. The character is in style an homage to Elvis. 

POTIPHAR: (20s-40s) Baritone, Vocal Range D to B. Potiphar is a rich, self-indulgent and sophisticated Egyptian capitalist who buys Joseph as a slave. Needs to be a strong actor as well as singer.

 MRS. POTIPHAR: (20s-30s) Strong Dancer. Mrs. Potiphar is an indulgent woman who likes to get her own way, and thinks first and foremost about her own personal gratification. 

JACOB: (40s-60s) Baritone, Low A to C. Jacob is the father of Joseph and his 11 brothers. He clearly favors Joseph as the first son of his favorite wife, unwittingly causing the friction that exists between Joseph and his brothers. Jacob needs to be a good actor, who can sing and move reasonably well. 

JOSEPH’S 11 BROTHERS: (16-20s) From oldest to youngest: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin), are jealous of Joseph being their father’s favorite son, sell him into slavery, and ultimately realize their wrongdoing.
BUTLER & BAKER: (20s-30s) The Butler and the Baker both work for the Pharaoh. They are both decent men in precarious situations. Sood singers who can double as brothers.
FEMALE ENSEMBLE: (18-30s) Will play multiple roles throughout the show including wives to Jacob and his sons and citizens of Egypt. They sing and dance throughout the entire show. Looking for energetic singers who move well.

YOUNG ENSEMBLE: (13-17)  Sing and dance along with main characters throughout the show. May double as other roles/understudies
